What to look for
Match the drive's USB speed tier to your computer's ports. 5Gbps drives top out around 460 MB/s, 10Gbps around 1,050 MB/s, 20Gbps around 2,000 MB/s, and USB4 around 3,800 to 4,000 MB/s. A faster tier only pays off if your port and cable support it, so check what your laptop offers before paying for speed you can't use.
Be careful with 20Gbps drives, because they fall back to 10Gbps on many machines.
