What to look for
Get PCIe Gen4 NVMe, not SATA, rated at 5,500 MB/s or faster. Sony's requirements call for an M-key PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with a recommended read speed of 5,500 MB/s or more, in lengths from 2230 to 22110. M.2 SATA drives aren't supported at all. A Gen5 drive fits the slot but runs at Gen4 speeds at best — and Sony hasn't said Gen5 drives are supported — so paying extra for Gen5 buys nothing on a PS5.
Size for your library: the PS5 accepts 250 GB to 8 TB, but 1TB to 2TB covers most players. Sony raised the maximum from 4 TB to 8 TB with a system update in September 2023, so bigger drives work if you need them. With a recent Call of Duty topping 130 GB including its content packs, even a 1TB drive fills after a handful of big games.
Plan for the heatsink, and mind the thickness limit. Sony requires a cooling structure such as a heatsink, and the drive with its cooler must be at most 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick — up to 8.0 mm above the board and 2.45 mm below. Single- and double-sided drives both fit. Many drives on this list are sold without a heatsink; if the listing doesn't include one, add one to the plan. DRAM-less drives work, but Sony notes they may be slower than expected because the PS5 doesn't support Host Memory Buffer.
